Japanese red tea is known in western culture as black tea or by the kanji phonetic, koucha (respectfully wakoucha). Red tea from Japan is so rare in Japan itself that approximately 90% of Japanese consumption is imported from Sri Lanka, India, Kenya, and Indonesia. Total production of red tea in Japan is far less than 1% of the global market and of that number, approximately 10% is certified organic.
