Hand-carved Shiradake (white bamboo) chashaku (tea scoop) for the ceremonial measuring of matcha, made by Komakichi Kubo whose family lineage extends back to the recorded beginnings of this art form. He is the youngest of only 18 remaining masters in the bamboo discipline. The methods and skills he learned from his grandfather have been family secrets for centuries.
Each Shiradake chashaku is made with bamboo prepared according to time-honored traditions of old-Japan. The process begins with winter harvest when the bamboo is boiled to naturally remove oils and render it blonde. The poles are cold-dried for 2-3 years, taking on a beautiful aged patina, then masterfully hand-carved into cultural works of art for the tea ceremony.
