Traditionally crafted rustic Kurokinsai (black-gold decorated) teapot, handmade by Maekawa Junzo, fourth-generation Tokoname potter working from the Kenzan Kiln. Junzo-san is known for his mastery of traditional shudei and kuro-dei clays, continuing his family's legacy through contemporary interpretations of classic shapes. His work reflects a dialogue between past and present, balancing simplicity with elegance for everyday or ceremonial use.
This teapot incorporates a clay sasame (fine mesh) filter ensures a smooth pour, making it ideal for all types of loose-leaf tea, and the rustic surface is a tactile reminder of its origin in Japan’s oldest pottery region dating back to the 12th century. Tokoname is known for its brick-red iron-rich clay called shudei, and teapots from this region are prized for enhancing the sweetness of green tea.
Handmade Japanese tea wares are referred to as Kogei in Japan; the concept that beauty resides in the artisan’s work through nuances, wabi-sabi (irregularities), and defining differences between each piece.
Tokoname-yaki wares slowly absorb the aromas of tea with each use. Before the first steep, it is recommended to soak the teapot in warm water for 20 minutes allowing moisture to enter the pores. Adding a cup of rice to the water bath will help fill the pores and prime the teapot. After each use, simply rinse in lukewarm water and towel-dry. Let stand in a well-ventilated location and fully dry between steeps to aid the seasoning process.
