The Kikko (tortoise shell) Kabazaiku (cherry bark craft) tea tray is culturally expressive of good fortune and longevity believed to reside in talismans of tortoise shell. Handcrafted by Tomioka Shoten studio in the discipline of Kabazaiku, a craft long-valued for its origin in the Samurai. The hexagonal kikko pattern is the same design used on Samurai armor idealized here in this tea tray.
Made from the bark of the Yamazakura (mountain cherry tree), Kabazaiku dates back to the 18th century when the Satake Samurai introduced the technique. Each piece is still created entirely by hand, continuing the legacy of warrior-artisans who transformed bark into useful implements of refined beauty.
The Tomioka Shoten studio is nationally designated as a traditional-craft workshop, preserving the endangered art of Kabazaiku. Their philosophy of orienting with mountain-nature speaks to a great respect for high-standing traditions of oneness in old-world Japan.
