Magewappa Tea Tray
The kasanegasane (many layers) magewappa tea tray is designed by Yukio Hashimoto for Tomioka Shoten studio, bringing together two of Japan’s historic woodcrafts: kabazaiku (cherry bark craft) and magewappa (bent wooden rings). This bent ring tea tray is made with bark from the Yamazakura (mountain cherry tree), and Akita cedar wood, exhibiting the natural beauty of Japan's mountainous rainforests.
The Tomioka Shoten studio is nationally designated as a traditional-craft workshop, preserving the endangered art of Kabazaiku. Their philosophy of orienting with mountain-nature speaks to a great respect for high-standing traditions of oneness in old-world Japan.
