Japanese tea growers call this tea, JIRO, which means, "Successor", or that which connects the past to the future as a stem connects the branch to the leaf. It is premium grade houjicha comprised of leaf stems from the first-flush harvest, organically grown by tea master Irie Toshiro in the Yame mountains; the stems are lightly roasted over a charcoal fire, preserving essential antioxidants and giving the tea its golden color and distinct flavor. JIRO tea has a comforting aroma and is low in caffeine which makes it ideal before bedtime. It is often described as a mellow tea, with distinct notes of smoked applewood, bourbon, and star fruit. Houjicha’s balance of toasty warmth and smooth sweetness makes it a family favorite throughout Japan.

Irie Toshiro is a pioneer of organic tea farming in Japan, dedicating over 35 years to cultivating chemical-free green tea in the mountains of Yame. Inspired by his own story of industrial illness and recovery through pure green tea, he established his own farm isolated in the village of Kuroki, ensuring pure, uncontaminated soil and a thriving natural ecosystem.

Working alongside his son, Toshiro-san produces award winning tea that reflects both the vitality of Yame’s fertile climate and his commitment to the Japanese art of cultivating and preparing organic tea. His world-renowned teas embody the four characteristics that define the virtues of tea.
