Hand-carved Susudake (soot-bamboo) chashaku (tea scoop), for the ceremonial measuring of matcha, made from reclaimed Japanese bamboo hearths and temple rafters. Each bamboo scoop reflects decades, and sometimes centuries of traditional Japanese living, colored by time with a rich, deep brown hue and silky patina that cannot be replicated.

Authentic Susudake chashaku are becoming increasingly rare as old-world Japan is rebuilt with modern architecture, making each piece from the Suikaen workshop a relic of chanoyu (the Way of Tea) and Japanese history. Yasaburo Tanimura is one of 18 remaining chasen masters in Japan, handling the entire cycle from reclaiming aged bamboo to cutting and shaping. He is the 25th generation headmaster of his family's 500 year old lineage in the bamboo discipline, and nationally recognized as a traditional artisan of this endangered craft.
