Finely crafted kushime (comb-lined) teapot made from a dark variation of Tokoname’s famous red shudei clay and fired in a reduction chamber, which causes the natural clay surface to transform into a rich matte black patina. It is finished in the shudashi (vermillion) style by removing of a thin layer of the blackened surface on subtle details to reveal the original color of the clay. The clay sasame (fine mesh) filter ensures a smooth pour, making it ideal for all types of loose-leaf tea. Tokoname teapots are prized for enhancing the flavor of fine tea and bringing out the sweetness of green tea in particular.

Masterfully crafted by artisan Reiko Koie at Tokoname-yaki kiln, one of Japan’s six ancient kilns dating back to the 12th century. Koie-san is one of several master artisans from this region who have have been officially designated as Intangible Cultural Property Holders. This blackened kushime teapot is appropriately presented in a paulowina wood (princess wood) box stamped with the artisan's kiln mark.

Handmade Japanese tea wares are referred to as Kogei in Japan; the concept that beauty resides in the artisan’s work through nuances, wabi-sabi (irregularities), and defining differences between each piece.
